Shaving Storage – Hardware or Software?

As I started gathering more shaving hardware or software, I needed to figure out how to store it all. Our house and bathroom are not large, so figuring out how to efficiently store 4 aerosol cans of shaving foam and gel, 27 packs of blades, 4 razors, 2 shaving cream tubes, 10 shaving soaps of varying sizes, 3 after shave splashes/toners, 6 after shave balms/moisturizing lotions, 2 beard oils, 2 pre shaves, and 1 alum block became a challenge.

Some people in the Wicked Edge subreddit share their storage solutions with the group–sometimes just to show off their collections, which is fine, but also to show unique ideas they have. Some have gone as far as using a second bathroom in their house as the “shave den” where basically every potential storage space is given over to storing the razors, blades, soaps, etc. And others use entire shelves in the bathroom closet, or most of the medicine cabinet.

There are razor and brush stands widely available online, but those hold one or maybe two of each thing and take up shelf space–they won’t really work in a bin. There are custom made chests or drawer inserts that can hold razors and blades, but I don’t have a drawer in the bathroom, and it would just take up too much storage space on a shelf.

I do not have the luxury of a lot of space, so I’m trying to make it take up as little space as possible. And up until recently, it was spread across 3 small-ish bins plus some extra shelf space in both the closet and what little shelf space we have.

The first problem I tried to solve was storing my blades. They’re small boxes that, if left to their own devices, would just kind of slide around in a bin. I found a temporary solution in my house–plastic 6-hole candy bins for use in a candy box. I could wedge the boxes in there and it worked…mostly. But it wasn’t ideal. I posted a question asking how people store their blades, and surprisingly got only a few responses, most of which recommended a shoe box or plastic storage bin or cigar box. None of those really worked for me.

But I did learn from that post that a lot of people also store a bunch of their shaving stash in bins under their beds. This also does not work for me: I’m always the first one up in our house, usually pretty early, often in the dark, and grabbing boxes from under the bed was just impractical.

But I’d seen posts where people were using a tool chest to store some of their shaving products. Not just any ordinary tool chest, though, a Harbor Freight mini tool chest.

Now when I say mini, it is mini. It’s six inches tall and deep and 11 inches wide, so it really has limited functionality for any application–tools or otherwise. But it’s cute and functional. And it has nice rubber pads on the bottom of all three compartments.

Is it perfect? No, absolutely not. Is it workable for now along with one of the bins I’ve always used? Yeah.

Oh, and I got an extra partitioned storage tray to hold my blades. And that made me happy.
